I’m not a seer, but there are some things coming down the pike that will shift the way we view learning in general and global education in particular.
John Moravec over at Education Futures offers his personal list of five education predictions for 2008 and a bunch of links to other prognostications from various sources.
If your own crystal ball is a little foggy, take a look at the predictions and see the trends that are mentioned by numerous sources.
My bet? More collaborative efforts. More open source access to lectures. More encouragement for individual students to create their own education by selecting from a delicious menu of learning options.
And of course, my book will pull it all together with stories from those who are already out there doing it differently.
I’ve been busy lining up interviews:
**an explorer and writer, who climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro at the age of 11, was the youngest president of The Explorer’s Club, hosts his own adventure program on television and is now writing a book about exploration for teens
**a family that sold everything, bought a sailboat and spent the next four and a half years cruising through the Caribbean while homeschooling their two kids
**a young woman who has traveled to numerous countries–all expenses paid–to talk about overcoming her difficult childhood (foster care, arrested for stealing a car at 12) and is now getting her degree at 20 without spending a dime
**a young Asian woman in Louisiana who opted to “unschool” herself during what would be her senior year in high school
**a student who, at 14, spent a summer in South Africa through a terrific exchange program–and how it changed her life

I am a very interested US parent, who happened to attend K-12 schooling overseas (Bangkok and Mexico City). I feel blessed with an outstanding education, but am struggling with the US public school system. My brilliant children are becoming de-motivated and I am looking for any advice on how to keep them challenged and inspired to learn. I will continue to be a reader of your blog and look forward to your book! Thanks!
