Whew! Acadia Strike Appears To Be Over: Are Students Transferring to Dalhousie?

After 60 hours of mediated talks, the faculty and administrators at Acadia University appear to be close to signing an agreement, ending the three-week-old strike.
We’re hoping for an announcement that classes will resume on Wednesday or Thursday.  Fingers crossed!
Much of the discussion over at the ASU strike blog is centered around the rumor that a [...]

Week Three: Acadia Strike Continues–Where Are The Mediators?

Well, I’ve been hoping that the faculty strike at Acadia University in Nova Scotia (where my daughter is a student) would end this week, but the latest news is that both sides have walked away from their five-plus days of talks and the next step seems to be bringing in a mediator who is recognized by [...]

Thanks for Finding Free Agent U!

This is the first new post since moving from http://www.CreativeU.wordpress.com to this site.
I’m so sorry for the confusion–thanks for catching up with me!  I hope this will be the last change of location for this blog–I’m using the Free Agent U title in my book proposal (being shopped later this month!) and need to tie [...]

Strike Report: It’s Time For The Acadia Administration To Suck It Up and Sign

A special thank you to Andrew Biro, the faculty association spokesperson at Acadia University, for his comment on my previous post.
Here’s the core of it:
Acadia faculty salaries are now 6% below the average in Atlantic Canada, and 20% below the average across the country. If we accepted the administration’s offer, that gap would, at best, [...]

Workin’ 9 to 5 and Beyond At Acadia University

Oh, wow.  I got a lot of comments on my last post responding to David McMullin, a professor at Acadia University, where the faculty are in their second week of a strike.
You’ll notice that I approved only one of them to be shown on this blog.  The others were, shall we say, offensive.  And personal.  [...]

Is It Ethical For Professors To Strike? A Look At Acadia University

I just finished watching all of the YouTube videos about the professor strike at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada.
I wanted to add some comments.
One of the main questions asked of various students and professors interviewed was, “Do you think it’s ethical for the professors to go on strike?”
And I have no problem stating that [...]

What To Do During A University Strike–Tips From Acadia

So, what do students do when profs are on strike and classes are cancelled?
Well, if you happen to be at Acadia University during what is being called “Striketoberfest” you’ve got some great options.  Sure, about half of the students have gone home or elsewhere during the week, but those who remain are making the best [...]

Talks Break Down (Again) In Acadia University Prof Strike

So, Day 3 of what is being referred to as “Striketoberfest”–the prof strike at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, where one of my daughters is a student–has ended with crossed arms and pursed lips.
Can’t you people figure this out?
Honestly, this thing has been simmering for months and there were all kinds of opportunities to come [...]

Cookies For Striking Profs At Acadia University

My daughter just sent an email to give us an update on the professor strike at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, where she is a junior.
The strike started today (Monday).  No classes.  Half the student body has left campus.  Those who are sticking around are baking cookies to bring to their striking professors who are [...]

Professors Strike at Acadia University in Nova Scotia

Let’s get personal, shall we?
My third daughter is attending a terrific small college in Nova Scotia.  It’s called Acadia University.  I know, I know–you’ve probably never heard of it.  Well, our oldest daughter went there a few years ago and got a great education, and now our third daughter has transferred there and seems to [...]
